decisions with a clear head. People should treat every social encounter as a new experience and reserve judgment until afterwards. Many people have poor first impressions of others and when
they realize they were wrong in their judgment, it is sometimes too late. They may have lost a potential friend or client. An example of this type of prejudice
based on stereotyping might be that people who grow up in all white towns have little if any experience with black people. They watch television and hear them speaking with
particular verbiage and notice that they dress a bit differently. They watch the news where there are seemingly more violent criminals who are black. The rap artists who promote the
stereotype do not help matters. Indeed, because more black people are prosecuted for crimes, people will be more fearful of a black man they see on the street, even though
he might be quite a nice person. They may talk to him but be a bit on guard. It is because of stereotypes and a lack of genuine knowledge that
prejudice persists. Of course, the stereotyping of blacks is only one problem as stereotyping on television seems to exist for every nuance and one has to wonder how much of
an influence it has on people and their experiences in the real world. While to an extent, stereotypes are based on truth, stereotypes perhaps refer to a sector of
a community and not the whole community. What happens in reality is that people in the midwest will watch The Sopranos or re-runs of Happy Days and see Italian people
as larger than life, loud, virile and rather low class. Laurino (2000) comments: "Theres little room for educated, middle-class Italian-Americans who might not conform to the prevailing stereotypes" (31). And
