and that lead is considered to be a hazard when it is found in great concentrations (Shahid, 2009). The report goes on to provide specific data about the levels of
concentration and its relevance. There was also noted a particular concern about children playing along the beach because they may accidentally track sand into their homes or eat the sand
that is laden with lead (Shahid, 2009). Lead poisoning is a serious concern. It is something that can directly impact the population. Lead can cause neurological damage as well as
damage to the heart, kidneys and reproductive organs (Shahid, 2009). The beaches that are closed are not beaches that one would normally think to go when heading to the Jersey
Shore. Rather, they are up north. They are mostly used for fishing (Shahid, 2009). While bathing is prohibited, there are some people who go swimming anyway (Shahid, 2009). Still, this
closing will not hurt the Jersey Shore beach business unless the closings expand and include beaches from Sandy Hook on to Cape May. While summer business may not be hurt
by the closings, the publicity is not good and further, the situation does pose a health hazard to local residents. The prospect of lead contamination is something that can also
hurt people in other regions as lead may be something that is ignored all too often. This of course may be isolated cases. Both mayors of Old Bridge and Sayreville-the
