human race is not only flawed but extremely corrupt as well. Renouncing Charles Darwin, who wrote On Origin of the Species and consequently created the theory of evolution by natural
selection, Twain explicitly states that the ascent of man from lower animals should rather be considered the descent of man from higher animals. In his essay, Twain conducts
several experiments and comes to the conclusion that he has reasons to be disgusted with the human species. One such experiment was on a buffalo hunting trip. The hunters killed
seventy-two animals, ate a portion of one and left seventy-one to rot. He compares the humans actions to that of an anaconda. He put an anaconda in a cage with
seven calves. The reptile ate one, lay back satisfied, and left the other six unharmed. He tried this on several occasions with the anaconda and always came back with the
same results. "The fact stood proven that the difference between an earl and an anaconda is that the earl is cruel and the anaconda isnt; and that the earl wantonly
destroys what he has no use for, but the anaconda doesnt" (Twain para. 7). Twains next experiment deals with greed and money. He knew of many men who had accumulated
millions of dollars. While these individuals had no use for that much money, he still saw their rabid hunger and greed for more and witnessed that they would go to
extreme lengths to get it, even if it meant at the expense of the ignorant, helpless and poor. Again, comparing humans behavior to animals, Twain conducted the experiment of furnishing
