may mark the progress of man in a positive manner. However, whilst many of the advances have been favourable, there has been a high cost associated with this type of
rapid progression. As the benefits have been reaped, the environment has suffered due to the way in which weapons development has progressed. The fight for freedom and against terrorists may
be noble, but it requires the use of weapons of many types. When we look at the type of damaged that has occurred we see that it is to the
environment in terms of the land, but also having a direct and an indirect on all of the living creatures that form a part of the ecosystem. In many cases
this includes man. In considering this we can examine stories for the press and see no matter what the perspective, humanitarian or nationalist, that the damage to the environment is
clear. One of the best known pollutants as a result of weapons development can be seen in the decommissioning of plants after the end of the cold war. For
one facility alone, developed as a direct result of the arms race and the cold war, the clean up procedure is projected at taking 75 years and costing $50 billion.
This is described very clearly in an article by Glenn Zorpette published in Scientific American, May 1996. Due to the publication Zorpette has an advantage, when we compare this article
to many others we have the opportunity to read about the subject in great detail. This article examines the Hanford Nuclear plant, the facility that originated the plutonium that
