In this paper, the student will try to explore how the Dalai Lama achieved the status he enjoys and the social, cultural and economic dimensions of that status. It also includes the kind of "stardom" he has attained, why it has appealed to so many people, and what kinds of cultural and social trends he represents or may have originated. The student also considers what our fascination with such a man says about our culture. Background on the Dalai Lama: His Holiness the Dalai Lama is "a Tibetan spiritual leader and the 14th incarnation of the Dalai Lama, called Jetsun Jamphel Ngawang Lobsang Yeshe Tenzin Gyatso, or just Tenzin Gyatso" (Dalai Lama biography). He was born July 6, 1935, in a Tibetan village; his name was Lhamo Thondup (Dalai Lama biography). Many people believe that the Dalai Lama is analogous to the Pope, but that is untrue. Buddhism has no one particular leader who "heads up" the religion the way the Pope is the leader of the Roman Catholic Church (Das, 2007). The Dalai Lama is the "highest-ranking lama in Tibetan Buddhism, but his is not official recognized as a leader among the other schools of Buddhism" (Das, 2007). These other Buddhist organizations include the Thai Buddhists, whose leader is the Sangha Raja (Sovereign Monk); and the Japanese Nichirin whose leader is the Fuji-san (Das, 2007).
