in relation to Christianity. Brown first grabbed the headlines and prime-time TV in 2003 with his theory that Jesus married Mary Magdalene. But The DaVinci Code contains many
more (equally dubious) claims about Christianitys historic origins and theological development. Its left to the reader whether these theories belong to Browns imagination or the skeleton of "facts" that
supports the book (Hansen, 2006). A vast number of things put forth in The Da Vinci Code offend Christians, but perhaps most importantly is the manner by which Brown
(2003) blatantly attempts to sway his audiences with flimsy proof. This is ultimately an illustration of how truthiness - a term used to describe people who "insist that what
they feel and want to be true must be treated as true, all contrary evidence be damned" (Clapp, 2006, p. 22) - can not only capture attention but also influence
others to believe what is not irrefutable. Having the courage - or is it stupidity? - to say to the face of contemporary Christians that "almost everything our fathers
taught us about Christ is false" (Brown, 2003, p. 235), Brown (2003) immediately cast himself within an uneven playing field if he expected the religious community to fall into place
