Essay / Research Paper Abstract
This is a 3 page paper discussing the cultural transmission theory in sociology. Cultural transmission theory in sociology addresses the societal and cultural influences, impact and transmission of acceptable societal norms, perceptions and behaviors within generations and across generations of members of the same culture. Transmitted cultural behaviors can lead to generations of racism, sexism, deviance and poverty. One aspect of social evolution to remember however, of which cultural transmission is a major component, is that it is purposeful, innovative and adaptive to new societal changes. Whereas biological evolution takes generations for change, social evolution can occur within generations. Cultural transmission can have a predictable process in which cultures can adapt to societies outside of their own and change their cultural frame accordingly. Despite this process of adaptation however, historical cultural components still exist within the transmission process which results in some of the differences found between different cultures within the same geographical location.

a number of theories within the field of sociology which relate social phenomenon and human behavior. In regards to social evolution, the reliance is not upon the biological aspects of
learning but upon the learned cultural aspects within society and which are passed on from generation to generation. Sociological evolution is also seen as occurring on a much faster scale
than biological evolution. Whereas biological evolution takes place over generations, sociological evolution can take place several times over one generation as a way to adapt to new social situations. Lastly,
the greatest difference between biological evolution and cultural evolution is probably that of cultural transmission according to Stephen Gould in which "transmission across lineages" is the chief avenue of change
(Gould 1992, p. 65; Elwell, 2003). Cultural transmission in regards to sociological change is also relevant because unlike biological evolution which has no predictable progress, the learned adaptation through cultural
transmission accumulates "favorable innovations by direct transmission and amalgamation of traditions (cultural contact in various forms) allows any culture to choose and join the most useful inventions of several separate
