values with regard to women and gender roles. Discussion In order to make sense of this, we have to briefly consider what society deems womens role and gender roles to
be. That is very well-known: today, even after decades of struggle, womens roles are largely deemed to be "appropriate" when they center on the home and family. Women are still
defined in relationship to the men in their lives; they are someones mother or someones wife, but rarely people in their own right. We know that women have fought for
equality for decades, only to remain trapped under the "glass ceiling"; numerous studies have also shown that the wage gap between men and women, which was closing, is widening again.
In addition, there has been a move toward conservatism and "traditional values," suggesting that many people would like to see a return to the imagined society of the 1950s, with
men working and women in the home. Thus, its fair to say that in todays society, women are expected to fulfill "nurturing" and "caring" roles while men are more suited
to "active" and "aggressive" pursuits. This is not the model we find in Beauty and the beast. In the fairy tale itself (this explication is taken from Jeanne-Marie LePrince de
Beaumont), Beautys father has six children, three sons and three daughters; she is the youngest of the daughters. She is also the most beautiful, sensible and good natured, which rouses
