Whether mainstream America is aware of it or not, Spanglish is a growing component of
American culture. A combination of Spanish and English, it arose in the U.S. among Spanish speaking immigrants, immigrants that were forced to incorporate English into their language as a
matter of survival. Spanglish has become prominent enough in some areas that some consider it a threat to English, Spanish, or even the chance of Hispanics to succeed in
their adopted country! This paper will contend, however, that whether or not Spanglish is a threat is dependent on many factors. However we perceive it, Spanglish is not
something that is likely to go away in the near future. Spanglish arose because of a blending of cultures. It was typically
embraced by first generation descendants of Mexican immigrants who came to identify neither with their Mexican parents or with mainstream America. They picked and chose the aspects of these
two cultures that suited them. Cuban and other Hispanic immigrants ultimately added to the linguistic evolution which occurred. As will be discussed more thoroughly below, that evolution continues
