The cruise line industry is often associated with opulence enjoyed only by those with a high disposable income. This is an outdated perception as the cruise industry is one that has grown and evolved over the last few decades into a more mainstream leisure industry. Part 1 Political Infuances The direction and prosperity of the industry of the cruise line industry has changed following the events of September the 11th and the terrorist attack by Al Qaeda on the US which was a political this has decreased demand for cruises. There are also trade association that seek to influance both political and public opinion. Within the industry the main trade association is the ICCL (International Council of Cruise Lines), this organisation represents the sixteen major cruise line companies. These companies are responsible for 95% of all cruises in North America and globally 85% of all cruises (WTTC et al, 2002). In addition to the sixteen cruise line companies there are also a further 73 members which are strategic partners of the cruise line companies (WTTC et al, 2002). The cruise lines within this organisation operate 90 vessels and carry 7 million passengers (figures correct for the year 2002) (WTTC et al, 2002).
