We will look at this reversal of morality in the characters of John Proctor and Rebecca Nurse in this discussion. John Proctor Elizabeth, Johns wife forgives John for his indiscretion, but still all is not well in this particular house in Salem. John says to Elizabeth, "I see now your spirit twists around the single error of my life, and I will never tear it free!" (62). Elizabeth responds by saying, "Youll tear it free--when you come to know that I will be your only wife, or no wife at all! (Abigail) has an arrow in you yet, John Proctor, and you know it well!" (62). And there are definitely more slings and arrows to follow. For Elizabeth has dismissed Abigail; today we would say has "sent her packing." This deprives Abigail of a place to live, employment and John, needless to say the girl is ticked off, and in her emotional hysteria accuses Elizabeth of witchcraft. The citizens of the town do not know or guess these could be the comments of an immature person who is determined to get back at who she perceives as her "rival." Rather they listen to the girl, and in the case of all good villains she switches the blame, "She is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me!
