John Proctor is a farmer who, with his wife Elizabeth, operate a small farm just outside this small town. John Proctor is a man who struggles to maintain his good name in the midst of questions of his propriety and his hidden affair with Abigail Williams. Elizabeth Proctor, John Proctors wife, is sometimes cold-hearted, but always maintains her decency, even after she discovers the affair between her husband and Abigail. Abigail Williams is the niece of Reverend Parris, and a stalwart member of the society. Abigail worked for the Proctors until Elizabeth Proctor discovered the affair between her husband and Abigail, at which time she fired Abigail. Abigails character is central to the conflict that occurs in the story; she is skilled at lying and her anger at being discovered (and subsequently rejected by John Proctor) leads to her vindictive claims that result in the condemnation of her ex-lover. Abigails actions are not presented as particularly ethical; her comments about her early life make it clear that the families who have been responsible for her upbringing have adopted something of a double standard. They have expected her to behave in the modest and subservient way which is usual for Puritan women, but because she is a foster-child, have neglected to train her in this mode of behaviour; it is evident that she has been treated primarily as a servant rather than as a member of the family.
