this topic: Francis Boshas The Critical Response to John Cheever outlines a number of different critical perspectives on author John Cheever (1912-1982), with a focus on assessments and reviews of
Cheevers works at the time of publication. Bosha brings together these historical documents and integrates them with assessments of Cheevers personal progress as an author and the factors that
influenced his writing career. In creating an effective view of Cheevers work and the influence of specific factors in his life, Bosha sought to bring together the works
of literary historians, academics and even the assessments of Cheevers work in the media as a basis for understanding the development of Cheevers literary perspective. Essentially, the focus of
this book is the belief that Cheever developed as an author within a literary culture, a literary context, and understanding the influencing factors is important to understanding the author.
The relationship between literary concepts, major themes, and conceptual viewpoints used to assess Cheevers works, then, provide insight into authorship and the value of his body of work as a
whole. Bosha begins the collection of criticisms and assessments by presenting an introduction to Cheever, with some reflections about his life and authorship, and a chronology of events in Cheevers
life. This chronology is valuable in putting into a time frame some of the criticisms presented later in this compilation, and though the chapters are sequential, this chronology is
