overview of manner in which this legal system operates. The criminal justice system consists of four basic components: 1) law enforcement; 2) prosecution; 3) judiciary; and 4) corrections, which encompasses
adult and juvenile courts, as well as the processes of probation and parole (Anonymous 2002). Even though these components each have their own separate responsibilities and legal duties, in order
for the criminal justice system to operate successfully, these four components must work together in an effective manner. Law Enforcement; the police In the vast majority of cases, the
local law enforcement community (police departments in urban areas; sheriff departments in rural areas) provides the first contact with the legal system for a victim of crime. Law enforcement officers
are, therefore, responsible for such legal duties as 1. Receiving and documenting reports of crime within the agencys jurisdiction; 2. Investigating the reported crimes; 3. Gathering and holding
evidence of the crime; 4. Arresting the alleged offender; and 5. Conducting follow-up investigations as needed (Anonymous, 2002). Several factors can affect how these duties are carried out. For
instance, the size of the department, or the manner in which divisions are arranged, can affect whether or not the officer responding to the scene of a crime will also
be the individual to conduct the follow-up investigation. In other words, after the initial report is made, a detective may be assigned to conduct follow-up investigations. After investigation has been
conducted and the alleged offender has been apprehended, the law enforcement officer participates in the next part of the system by appearing in court to testify in the prosecution of
the case. Also, officer may be involved in grand jury hearings (in the case of serious crime), preliminary hearings, or as witnesses at a trial (Anonymous, 2002). Prosecution As the
