were, at best, sometime "kindly" (Tourville and Ingalls, 2003, p. 21). Nightingale totally altered this public image and, in so doing, ushered in a new societal paradigm When Nightingale arrived
in the Crimea, both cholera and typhus were prevalent throughout the hospital; so much so, that the mortality rate from disease was seven times the rate caused by a
soldier dying from wounds received in battle (OConnor, Robertson and Davidson, 2003). Unlike many health practitioners who had come before her, Nightingale realized that these statistics were due to the
"appalling environmental and sanitary conditions" that characterized the British hospital (Salvage, 2001, p. 172). Nightingale took steps to rectify these conditions. She make sure that there was a clean, fresh
water supply and she made sure that the hospitals patients had adequate nutrition by purchasing fresh fruit and vegetables with of her own funds. Then, Nightingale set about changing
the way in which the hospital was run by collecting data, organizing and reviewing hospitals, while making sure that hospital record-keeping was performed accurately. Then, using this information, she proved
that by instituting improved sanitation and nutrition, there was a corresponding decrease in morality (Tourville and Ingalls, 2003). In other words, Nightingale formulated a nursing theory, conducted research, acted upon
her results, and significantly improved the outcomes of her patients. During the course of her extensive nursing career, Nightingale author over 200 books, which includes the first published nursing
textbook (OConnor, Robertson and Davidson, 2003). Nightingale also promoted the idea that nurses should be well educated and receive special training in nursing. In her textbook, Notes on Nursing, she
