now the United States of America, Turkey was not formed peacefully. Of course, Turkey evolved during the early part of the twentieth century, which is a far different time period
than the eighteenth. Wars were privy to more sophisticated techniques and strategy later on. In fact, the military was integral to political, economic and social processes which created change and
the formation of Turkey as a republic in 1923. This was a nation that sprung from the Ottoman Empire, but it was one that was created by a grass
roots movement that turned into an army. In fact, it was a disorganized body of people who wanted change and who would be led by one man to victory. The
ramifications of the conflict would be a new nation. Indeed, victory was had and Turkey lives on. Of course, it was not an easy feat. The Republic of Turkey had
been established in 1923 and evolved from the famous Ottoman empire, an empire that was at its height during the 16th century prior to suffering a long period of decline
("Political," 2001). Its fate had been set when it joined the German side during World War One and then in 1919, Greek forces occupied Izmir and fanned out into
western Anatolia (2001). It was only a matter of time before Turkey would become an independent state. The occupation had set off a nationalist resistance movement, led by Ataturk, where
in 1922 the Greeks were defeated (2001). It would however be a misnomer to thinking that the process occurring in between 1919 and 1922 was peaceful. Macfie (2001) reports
