is based on principles that denote a separation of church and state. Of course, to an extent, the United States never really outlaws religion, but rather, it was thought that
the people should choose their religion and not have a state sponsored one. This is an idea that makes sense and supports freedoms and the right to be left alone.
Many people in fact fled their own countries to come to a place where they can practice the very thing they believe in. However, although it is true that many
people support religious freedom and run from religious persecution, from a true religious persons point of view, a secular state is simply wrong. To embrace a religion is to embrace
it wholeheartedly. The Catholic who uses birth control or annuls a marriage to stay in the church is somehow skirting around something that he believes. Avoiding necessary laws is simply
wrong. Similarly, a Protestant who is in office and supports abortion rights is going against the grain of his religion. It is simply impossible to be a true religious practitioner
and also sanction separation of church and state. Tolerance is not compatible with religious belief. For example, while one cannot force their religion on another, if the religion teaches that
nonbelievers will go to hell, it is only compassion that would drive a religious individual to try and convert the nonbeliever. After all, it is in the nonbelievers best interest
to convert. Not trying to initiate a conversion, or change the secular law to conform to ones religion, is in a sense sacrilegious. To condone and tolerate other opinions is
to negate the very premises of ones cherished religion. It is a misnomer that tolerance is even possible if in fact one particular religion is correct. Although one cannot prove
