state of Georgia. The book begins with the colonial times, illustrating a colony whose intentions were grand, into a Georgia that saw the lynchings of blacks as entertainment, up until
modern times in the state of Georgia. The following paper presents a review of the book by Bartley. The Creation of Modern Georgia First and foremost, the student
requesting this essay has requested that the paper be written from the perspective of an African American female. This writer cannot review any book from someone elses perspective, regardless of
their race or gender. This writer may be African American and female and yet their opinion would still differ from the students. The point is that not all white people
will react to this book the same as other white people and not all black people will react the same as other black people when reading this book. Everyone has
a different history that would clearly come into play when perceiving and interpreting this book. As such the paper will focus on the topic of African Americans in the history
of Georgia in Bartlebys work. Bartleby illustrates a Georgia that could well have been a very enlightened and noble state in relationship
to the ideals of the founders. "With London abounding in poverty-stricken citizens, the philanthropic trustees set as their goal the creation in an unspoiled wilderness of a utopian sanctuary for
Englands downtrodden poor" While black people were not considered citizens of Europe or of the new land, and thus held no power or position, it seems that had this been
the path followed by Georgia it may well have created a state whose history would not have been nearly so oppressive or unethical concerning slavery and the African American people.
