that the prophets spoke the words of a singular higher being. One of these prophets was Moses, who informed them that they must move out of the desert and
settle in a land called Canaan. Moses also set down a specific set of laws governing the nomads conduct for forming a society. Since these words were from
the mouth of God, Mosess words were written on tablets that became the arc of the covenant-representing the covenant Israelite each made with God. The reward was their own
land. Along the way, before they had reached Canaan, the various nomads became more closely tied by an emerging belief in this monotheistic god, and in this evolving religious
experience, the idea of statehood was born and fostered. A belief in statehood was different from their own nomadic past, and
this is why it was necessary to find some meaning behind their desire for a settled existence. When Moses spoke of Canaan, having already been established as the
mouth of God, this became the Israelites destination. However, the prophets warned them that their quest would be fraught with trials, and they must listen to the prophets for
direction and support. The prophets also warned the Israelites that they would meet up with a number of people, pagans, who would question their laws, their rituals, and their
