addition to the fear that this engenders in the hearts of human beings, there is also the knowledge that the best of times may soon be followed by misfortune. From antiquity onward, the innate fear caused by knowledge of its vulnerability has caused humanity to look to the heavens and imagine supernatural beings with the powers and longevity beyond the abilities of mere human beings. This has been the ongoing impetus behind the formulation of religion throughout the ages. An examination of historic documents reveals that questions of morality have led to formulations of mythologies since the beginning of record history. The Sumerians were one of the first peoples to recognize the fear of death as a principal motivating factor in human behavior (Bailkey and Lim 5). In the Sumerian epic, The Epic of Gilgamesh, the theme that unites the varied heroic exploits of the hero is his fear of death and his search for a means of living forever (Bailkey and Lim 5). Like many bold young men, Gilgamesh is not initially afraid of death. Prior to facing Huwawa, Gilgamesh is full of boasts and oblivious to death. He says to Enkidu, "Who, my friend, is superior to death?/ Only the gods live forever in the sun./ As for mankind, numbered are their days/ Whatever they achieve is but the wind!" (Epic of Gilgamesh 8). When Gilgameshs friend Enkidu is killed, he is "panic-stricken by the sudden realization of the stark reality of death" (Bailkey and Lim 5). During the remainder of the epic, Gilgamesh travels in search of a means of cheating death and living forever.
