focused on a photographer took place in the midwest, there are many covered bridges that stand today in upstate New York. Each bridge has a charm of its own. In
exploring the counties of Dutchess, Sullivan and Ulster, one gets a sense that the bridges are a unique part of the culture and a pride and joy of the local
residents. New York State in general has a rich history and the idea of covered bridges--something no longer built--adds a sense of that history to tourists and residents alike.
The bridges, whether in parks or on private property, provides people with a sense of community and history as they explore the authentic New York attractions. Covered bridges do
provide some sense of symbolism for small-town America ("Covered," 2002). Today, much of the fast paced lifestyles to which some many are accustomed hover around cities with large steel bridges.
Even suburbs have overpasses that allow one to cross a stream, but there is no attention to detail. There is no cover and one barely knows that they had even
crossed water. The bridges around the nation that were built during the nineteenth century seem to be a bit archaic and a little strange, but they are picturesque and sentimental
(2002). They are sometimes called "kissing bridges" and they prompt one to think back to a time when life was simpler and people lived closer to the land (2002).
Covered bridges also nicely complement autumn leaves and they are photogenic as well ("Covered," 2002). Many artists--including Grandma Moses who lived and worked in upstate New York--paint or photograph
