Dantes is a good protagonist, though he struggles with the need for false identities. Many of the other characters are Dantes enemies, including Villefort, Fernand, and Danglars.
Villefort, for example, betrays Dantes for his own gains, and becomes a favoured individual in the Kings court. Canderosse, Fernand and Danglars work together for their personal gain against
Dantes. Mercedes Herrera, the Countess de Morcerf, is originally Dantes fianc?e but becomes wrapped up in the deception and in the end marries Fernand. CHAPTER 1 Dantes, a
ships firstmate, must return to port in Marseilles without a ships captain, because of the death of his own captain at sea. It appears that he will be appointed
the new captain of the ship, and Dantes asks for a few days off to see his father, his financee Mercedes, and possibly to marry her. Danglars conspires to
make the ships owner feel suspicious of Dantes, which he is unsuccessful in doing, and Dantes leaves to see his family. CHAPTER 2 Dantes goes to see his father
and finds that his father has not eaten much in the past three months. His father confesses that Dantes had left a debt when he left town with a
