country, as in general, many have grown up somewhere else. Their experiences in the United States are often different from experiences of someone who grew up in the Asia. It
has been noted for example that patterns of elderly living arrangements among Chinese, Japanese, and non-Hispanic whites will vary (Kamo & Zhou, 1994) . Elderly Asians are more
likely than their white counterparts to live in extended family homes, particularly when it comes to their married childrens homes (1994). The tendency to live with offspring is peculiar
to a variety of cultures. This is found in Italian families as well for example. Yet, the predominate pattern in the United States is that once children are grown, they
leave the home and create their own families. Once this occurs, offspring may relocate far enough so that they only see their parents occasionally. The pattern of Chinese and Japanese
families to live close together seems to be important even after studies are controlled for place of birth (Kamo & Zhou, 1994) . This suggest that the culture, and
not the area, play the most significant part in the phenomenon. Researchers feel that while the influence of immigrant culture is reduced through acculturation, the effect of the influence
is nonlinear and the cultural effects on elderly living arrangements persist longer than expected, especially as it concerns modernization and assimilation models (Kamo & Zhou, 1994). Clearly, Asian families
are stronger and while some might suggest that the bonds are positive, modern psychologists might call it enmeshment. In other words, in American society, such arrangements where children live with
parents is not deemed healthy. At the same time, much of that has to do with culture after all. While assimilation is perhaps slowed by the living arrangements,
