that may soon overtake tobacco as the chief cause of preventable deaths" (Neergaard, 2001). The link between obesity and increased risk of both type II diabetes and heart disease
is well known (New Risk Factors, 2001). Most people are less aware of the increased risk of cancer. These are the three
most costly diseases in the country in terms of dollars, and they represent only the physical effects of obesity. There is a psychological aspect to consider as well.
With more than 60 percent of Americans now having crossed the line from overweight to obese (Cancer Researchers Warn About Obesity-Cancer Link, 2001), obesity promises to be of far greater
dollar and psychological cost than ever before. Costs to Society Economic Costs In terms of
dollar costs, health care by far is more greatly affected than are other areas. Health care is more costly than at any other time, and there are greater numbers
of people without health care insurance than in years past. As the economy worsens and the US slides into recession, we can expect still more layoffs and greater numbers
of individuals without health care insurance. There had been more than a million workers laid off before the attacks of September 11 - largely as a result of the
fallout of the high tech industry - and the attacks appear to have pushed an already-fragile economy over the brink into recession. While
