global cosmetics industry was worth about $124 billion in 2004 and was expected to surpass $145 billion in 2005 (LOreal SA SWOT Analysis, 2005). The skin care segment is the largest on a global scale. Ethnic cosmetics are growing rapidly in the US (Nagel, 2005), but color products are growing most rapidly overall. A relatively new product group is the natural group, "expected to be worth more than $10 billion" (LOreal SA SWOT Analysis, 2005; p. 8) in 2006. In the US, "and the market for cosmeceuticals in the US alone is expected to be worth more than $5 billion" (LOreal SA SWOT Analysis, 2005; p. 8) by 2006. The Cosmetics Industry The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association (CTFA) says of the cosmetic industry is that it is "dynamic, diverse, innovative and challenging, and has the potential to provide a fulfilling career" (About the Industry, n.d.). "In Title 21 of the Code of Federal Regulations (21 CFR) part 720.4, the Food and Drug Administration recognizes 13 separate categories of cosmetic products" (About the Industry, n.d.). These categories include skin care, color products and fragrances, but they also include items such as toothpaste, baby products and deodorant. Table 1 lists cosmetics companies largest in total revenues and those expected to grow to the greatest degree over five years. Procter & Gamble is the largest US company included in the revenue leaders but is not included in the table because it is not a "cosmetics" company even though it owns the Cover Girl brand.
