it can be done in such a way as to minimize environmental damage. The other side says that drilling cannot be done without hurting the environment. Further, the real problem
is consumption and not foreign dependence. By drilling for yet more oil, the main point is lost, which is that people ought to conserve energy, and not look for more
oil resources to waste. Michael Brune (2010) writes about the problem and provides some alternatives to drilling: " The only way to make sure we dont see another drilling
disaster is to end our dependence on oil. Rather than putting coastal communities in the Gulf, the Atlantic and Alaska at risk for more oil spills, we should be expanding
wind, solar and efficiency measures and creating a 21st century transportation system. Our leaders should focus on investments that will create clean energy jobs in oil-producing regions such as the
Gulf Coast" (A10). Brune (2010) makes a good point. Although those in Alaska might benefit financially, and drilling would be good for reducing American dependence on foreign oil, there is
a cost to the environment. Further, the threat of an oil spill is also an issue. Alternatives can be used to get energy and this is what should be done.
People must play a significant role in preserving regions threatened by human encroachment. This is because if people do not speak up about the problem, money hungry oil companies
will continue to expand. Most firms do not care about the environment as they are generally focused on short-term growth. It is not as if all companies are this way,
