A brief literature review will help answer these questions. How does the year-round education program work? From the outset it is important to realize that year-round school doesnt mean that students are in school "year-round," or more days than the traditional Labor Day to Memorial Day schedule. Typically students are in school the same number of days. It is the building or the school that is opened year-round. What is different is in the length and frequency of the breaks. Year-round programs offer shorter, more frequent vacations. A typical year-round schedule includes nine weeks of instruction followed by three weeks off. A longer break, usually four to six weeks, divides each school year. Often remedial or supplemental instruction is offered during the three-week intersessions. This means that kids who are having problems early in the year get help during the first intersession, after nine weeks, rather than waiting all year for summer school. Gifted students can be given extra challenges during these sessions. Most year-round class schedules operate on some type of "track" system. In such a system, the students are divided into a different number of tracks. For example, a school in the Chicago system Drummond Elementary is divided into four tracks, or units, by grade level: preK-1, 2-3, 4-6, and 7-8. On a rotating basis, each unit attends school for 60 days and then takes 20-day breaks.
