Executive Summary Researchers have attempted to determine the underlying causes of autism for decades, with little success. Though there is evidence
of some genetic connections, there is a lack of conclusive evidence that autism is purely genetic, and genetic causes do not inherently explain the rise in autism in recent years.
Efforts were made to show a connection between mercury in immunizations that could explain the increase in cases, but even after mercury was removed from immunizations, the number of
autistic children continues to rise. While medical researchers seek answers to these questions, it is important to consider the impacts of controversies over the causative factors for autism
on the choices of families and on treatment options for autism. This study will consider the existing controversies, including assertions made in 2006 by actress Jenny McCarthy regarding her
sons "recovery" from autism through dietary changes and behavioral therapies. This study will assess a population of parents of children with autism and consider their views of existing controversies
as they influence the choices of treatment options for their children. Background For almost two decades, researchers have attempted to determine the cause of autism.
