One thing that the student can do in looking at the work of Chopin is research some of the history of women at the time Chopin was writing. As mentioned,
women were generally only able to be wives and mothers and if they were incredibly poor or underprivileged they may have been prostitutes or maids. But, women were also very
chaste, meaning they did not have sex with men, except their husbands, and even then it was generally something a woman was obliged to do, it was a wifely duty.
Chopin clearly did not feel that way and in researching her works the student can easily see that. It is noted by one critic how, "According to Elizabeth Ammons, turn-of-the-century
American women writers exposed in their fiction the link between institutional and sexual exploitation of women and female muteness" (Thomas 19). This essentially means that women, like Chopin, who wanted
to break into a mans world, the world of literature, primarily used their own voice, which was not heard in society, to illustrate how confined and oppressed women were in
some way. But, this was not taken well and was controversial for women should be happy to be wives and mothers, not writers, and Chopins work reflects this. One
