in terms of new thought. Religion was still in the air, and people were testing boundaries. Of course, Congreve lived during a time when amazing things had recently came to
fruition in the arts, and would also soon be privy to more wonderful events. During his lifetime, he would not produce a great amount of work, but he did produce
quality work. While he had his critics, his work is later judged as objectively good. However, the evidence seems to suggest that he did not allow the criticism to merely
roll off of his back. Thus, he lived a mundane existence, and did not write all of his life. Congreve was born in 1670 and lived until 1729 ("William
Congreve"). That would make him 59 years old at the time of his death. Perhaps it was considered old at the time. Still, he did not die of natural causes.
Rather his death was caused by a carriage accident ("William Congreve (playwright)"). Yet, in that time period he accomplished a great deal in writing and in political life. A
renown poet, he was a playwright as well and his comic plays have been much applauded ("William Congreve"). In fact, one of his works called The Mourning Bride which was
created in 1697 contains the following well known line: "Heavn has no Rage, like Love to Hatred turnd, Nor Hell a Fury, like a Woman scornd" (qtd. in "William Congreve").
Born in England, the family moved to Ireland while William was still rather young and he would become friends with Jonathan Swift ("William Congreve"). Swift of course was another great
