way the world was, is and will be" (qtd. in Plummer, Baker and McCabe 159). Indeed, many people are oblivious to the wonders of he ocean. It goes down
so far that the bottom of the seas is more mysterious than what is found on Mars. Many people do not know that the bottom of the ocean still holds
many mysteries and is unexplored, but Sylvia Earle does. In fact, she has devoted much of her life to exploring that part of the universe. To Earle, the bottom of
the sea is a very exciting element to research. At the same time, while mysteries abound, there are things that are known that Earle claims that people do not
"get" such as the problem of toxic pollution, ecoterrorism, and overfishing (Plummer, Baker and McCabe 159). Some progress in terms of marine science has been made. About twelve million
dollars per year was set to be spent on NASA satellites; it is just a start, or as Earle puts it "we have our flipper in the door" ("A
rising"). Earle has chosen an often neglected area of scientific research and has made her mark. Who is this Sylvia Earle who has a lot to say about the oceans
of the world? Earle was born in New Jersey in 1935 ("Sylvia"). Her parents did not even have the money to send her to college, but she
went anyway ("Sylvia"). In those days, most girls did not attend higher education, but Sylvia was obviously very bright. She went on to win scholarships and did go to
