fought was at Gettysburg. Although that is the case, New Jersey did participate and each county did its share. In focusing on Morris County, one can see
that it participated in a myriad of ways. For example, the local militias and the townspeople were geared for the war. Mine Hill, for instance, is a small
town in Morris County that had been mined for iron in order to make cannonballs and that helped the war effort. In fact, Morris County had a great impact
on the Civil War and both Union and Confederate troops benefited from the County quite a bit during the war. First, it is important to ask whether
or not New Jersey was neutral. After all, there is evidence to suggest that New Jersey in general was sympathetic to the South, helped the South and so forth, but
it is most definitely North of the Mason-Dixon line. There is really no question that New Jersey is a Northern state. , some seriously disagree with the assumption that New
Jersey had sympathies for the other side. Professor William Gillette, of Rutgers University, challenges the idea that New Jersey is a Northern state that had Southern sympathies during
the war ("Jersey," 1994). He describes the border state status as the product of geography as opposed to politics or economics and while New Jerseys extensive prewar trade with
the South and the wartime strength of its Democratic party is evident, it seems that New Jersey was loyal to the Union (1994). At the same time,
