that are now a part of mainstream sociology have been revised and updated by sociologists who had come later. Still, Karl Marx is discussed as a significant contributor to the
field in his own right. In the course of his writings, Karl Marx would come up with a wealth of specific theories. For example, alienation is a significant idea. For
Marx, alienation is a condition that goes to the core of ones being. It is not necessarily that a person feels out of sorts or antisocial, but rather, that the
individual is not fulfilled. He noticed that people did not take pride in what they did because they did not own the means of production. They were not able to
create something from scratch. Instead, they were viewed as a cog in a machine. Today, one can see alienation in the faces of the Wal-Mart clerks, but alienation is
really more than dissatisfaction with a job. Marx & Engels (1992) said, in The Communist Manifesto: "The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honored and looked
up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage- labourers" (p.21). One can
see that this idea is timeless. Even in contemporary society, doctors have been reduced to paid wage laborers, particularly with the advent of managed care. The profession has been made
corrupt by money and no longer can physicians practice how they like. This is a very relevant issue in 2009 as health care issues are constantly debated. Another
concept aligned with Karl Marx go to ideas surrounding labor in general. While alienation is an idea tied to labor, there is much more that Marx contributed to the field
