is also introduced to the importance and significance of the title. The following paper examines the contribution of the various characters seen in the first chapter. The Contribution
of Characters in The Things They Carried As mentioned, in this first chapter the "things they carried" become very important in illustrating the individual characters. By describing what they each
carry, aside from the necessities involving war, the author is detailing the character, their personality, and their contribution as they individually make up the whole, which is the troop. And,
as the narrator indicates, "The things they carried were largely determined by necessity" (OBrien 2). In addition, the overall theme of the entire novel is survival and only through carrying
some small piece of reality, of life back home, can these soldiers hope to survive. In these respects all the men have something to share, something to contribute.
IN looking at the individual characters and what they carry, an important aspect of who they are and what they contribute, the first man
to be examined is Jimmy Cross. The narrator indicates that, "First Lieutenant Jimmy Cross carried letters from a girl named Martha....They were not love letters, but Lieutenant Cross was hoping,
so he kept them folded in plastic at the bottom of his rucksack" (OBrien 1). These letters are important for Cross because they give him, at least in the beginning,
a connection to the real world back in the States. Even though he knows she is not in love with him he finds them to be a very strong comfort
