Affirmative action, however, has been a critical element in promoting womens and minorities interest in the workplace. The issues surrounding Affirmative Action, the federally mandated requirement of aggressively seeking out minorities for employment and giving certain advantages to women over men and to minorities over non-minorities in terms of hiring and promotion practices, are complex. While many view affirmative action as an effective vehicle for the promoting the welfare of disadvantaged ethnic groups and women in the modern day workplace, others view it in a more negative light (Steele, 1990). Many, in fact, contend that affirmative action should be abandoned, that the interests of women and minorities in the workplace is now assured and that affirmative action policies are no longer needed. Nothing could be further from the truth. Affirmative action has been, and will continue to be, a safeqaurd against discrimination on the basis of gender, race, ethnicity, or nationality in the modern work environment. To better understand the continuing need for affirmative action it is helpful to define more precisely what affirmative action is. Edley (1996) defines affirmative action as encompassing any effort that is made toward expanding a womans or minoritys opportunity that utilizes: "membership in those groups that have been subject to discrimination as a consideration [in decision making or allocation of resources]" (Edley, 1996). To accomplish this, of course, certain individuals are hired, promoted, or otherwise awarded not solely for accomplishments such as education and experience but rather largely because of their status as a woman or a minority. ...
