once one dimensional "balancing act" has determined a focus on international interconnectedness, on global consumerism and global operational strategies, that have altered both market and non-profit sectors. The
concept of globalization was coined in the 20th century as a basis for explaining the lasting impacts of industrial development and the expansion of modern business operations. Technological advancements,
which improved production methods and reduced the need for skilled labor, resulted in the seeking of a less costly labor base. As a result, many companies outsourced some of
their production elements into foreign countries, resulting in an increasing influence of industrialized nations throughout the world. This is just one aspect, though, of the historical underpinnings of globalization.
Increasing technology has also resulted in an expansion of the influences of industrial countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the countries of the European Union, through
the influences of the mass media. The mass media and global development have influenced the direction of the modern consumer culture, placed emphasis on an increasing value for consumerism,
and have defined the tastes and temperaments of many of these communities. In fact, globalization has served as the starting point through which identification with Western ideals and Western
cultures has become normative. Critics of this process, then, have argued that globalization has determined a route to creating a consumer culture based on sameness, while others suggest that
the spread of what is popular simply defines the social importance of one culture over others. The Global Identity Both public and private sector components have determined the
