men or two women should not only be allowed but that they "promote the values that conservatives pride". Olson contends that marriage is something that society encourages because it
benefits society and that it shouldnt matter whether the marriage is between heterosexuals or homosexuals. Needless to say, Olsons arguments are flawed in more than one respect. The first
fatal flaw in Olsons argument is his definition of marriage as a "social and economic partnership". While that may be part of the definition of marriage, there is a
much more important part. Marriage is a holy union between two people for the purpose of promoting the interests of the family and the individuals that are members of
that family. Gay marriages run against everything that our religions teach us is right. The contention presented above is, of course, not politically correct. Never-the-less, that contention has
just as much right to be enunciated as does Olsons argument to the contrary. This is not an issue of equality. Yes, gays are prohibited from marrying because
of their sexual orientation (Mercier, 2008). They are, however, allowed to marry. They just have to marry someone of the opposite sex. There is, in fact, a
federal law (the Defense of Marriage Act) that prohibits such marriages (Hotakainen, 2009). Although Olson challenges the idea, one of the primary reasons for marriage is
the production and rearing of children. While, as Olson points out, not all heterosexual marriages produce children the majority do. Homosexual unions, of course, cannot accomplish this naturally.
