of genocide today? Because theyre not Arabs. Sudans government is an Arab dictatorship. Ethnic Africans have suffered discrimination for years and when they rebelled, in 2003, the government moved to
exterminate them" (Pelley). It seems simple, but the situation is complex. Some demographic information may help to shed light on the situation. Sudan is predominately black with 52% of the
populous and an Arab population comprising 39% ("Sudan: CIA"). Clearly, one can see that the Arabs are in the minority in terms of numbers, but they are a ruling majority.
The rest of the population is made up of foreigners, Beja and other peoples ("Sudan: CIA" ). Yet, it is a predominately Muslim nation, but the Sunni Muslim
is the rule at 70%; they live primarily in the north part of the country ("Sudan: CIA"). Christians, who live mostly in the south and in Khartoum only make up
5% of the total population ("Sudan: CIA"). The rest rely on indigenous beliefs ("Sudan: CIA"). The consequences of the genocide, aside from death, are dramatic. While the problems linger,
it is unfortunately a situation that does not seem to see a solution. Morrison writes: "The situation is growing both more dire and more difficult with each passing month. There
is the prospect of starvation, as the food-aid pipeline runs short of supplies. And the violence is becoming more complex" (25). The fact that genocide is taking place anywhere in
the world today suggests that the world is not doing all that it can to keep the peace. After all, for some time, there was hesitancy before Hitler was captured.
