Alexander is someone who is not easily captured in the context of a work geared for younger readers. However, Behnke does manage to provide a sense of who Alexander was and begins with a portrait of this man in his youth. Behnke for example tells perhaps the most well known story in the history of this well-known figure (6). That is, there had been a horse difficult to control, but the young Alexander criticized his father and the other men for simply not being savvy enough to control the horse (Behnke 4-5). Alexander claimed he could do better in controlling the animal (Behnke 5). Behnkes version of what happened next is this: "Turning the horse to face the sun, so that he could see neither of their shadows, Alexander petted the animal and spoke softly to him. When the beast was calm, Alexander leapt onto its back, and horse and rider galloped furiously down the plain" (Behnke 5). Alexander became quite well known as a result of this story (Behnke 6). Throughout the work, there are many tales of Alexander the Great relayed and there are boxes of explanatory notes along the way. For example, one sidebar contains the title "Voices from the Past." The author explains that when studying ancient Greece, it is important for a student to note that the material is derived from one type of individual as only the people who had the time and ability to write were well off (Behnke 7). Here, the author points out the divide in wealth among the populace. Some more notes on Greece follow along with a map that provides information on Classical Greece and Macedonia from 500 BC and 300 BC (Behnke 8).
