a helmet seems to be something that should be a personal choice. If someone wants to do something with his body, whether it is committing suicide or engaging in unprotected
sex, that is his choice. Of course, suicide is ironically illegal, and someone with AIDS who has unprotected sex can be charged with murder. Drugs are illegal purportedly to protect
the people that use them. There is certainly a cry for freedom in America in a nation that doles out personal freedom in small doses. There are so many
limitations that people feel that they should have a right to do what they like with their own bodies. If they want to ride a motorcycle without a helmet, they
should have that right. The other side of the coin is that there are laws to protect people in general. There are laws against drugs, laws against prostitution and laws
against underage drinking. Driving while drinking or even using a cell phone is illegal. There are so many laws on the books that aim to protect people and they are
there not just for the comfort of the individual, but for society at large. For example, laws against drugs are to protect society. Addicts steal and wreak havoc on the
family. Treatment for addiction is very costly. It makes sense to have a law against it. There are similar rationales for most every law that limits the freedom of people
to do what they want. As part of the social contract, people have certain rights, but they should not have the right to do anything they want. How does not
wearing a helmet hurt society? Riders who do not wear helmets are much more likely to get hurt, and this is something that puts an added burden on the health
