First, it is noted that the economy, and religion, which are currently two areas where there are existent fears, is deemed not be primary issues. In other words, while some say that the current war on terror is actually a religious war, religion or ideology will not conflict. Those who subscribe to ideological notions that the economy is a significant factor in the scheme of things are wrong. Many theorists such as Karl Marx would see economic motivations for all human behavior, but under this model, the economy does not matter. Here, what is at stake is Western civilization. Essentially, according to this thesis, there will be a conflict between the West and the rest of the world. Samuel P. Huntington (1993) wrote an article entitled "The Clash of Civilizations" where he remarked that, amongst other things, the world is entering a new phase in history where it is the end of history as it had been known. He goes into the past and discusses the cold war when there was a first, second and third world, a paradigm that no longer exists (Huntington, 1993). Indeed, it does seem to be the case that the world is changing. Huntington predicts a clash between seven or eight civilizations, one of which is the West (Huntington, 1993). Under his model, there is a clash between a number of civilizations where the west is just one. Of course, Huntington does seem to emphasize the west.
