More Information on This Paper, Please Psychologist Carl Rogers argued that there are six fundamental conditions necessary for therapeutic change, and that these conditions related both to
the individuals willingness in the therapeutic relationship and the development of that relationship as a whole. The role of both client and therapist, then, are inherently linked in a
relationship designed towards successful personal change. Other theorists, though, have challenged the nature of Rogers suppositions regarding the conditions necessary for change, and have even asserted that other conditions
also must be present. The development of an additional core condition and the progression of Rogers view of empathy provides some insight into the influence of Rogers on the
adaptation of new therapeutic perspectives. Rogers Therapy Carl Rogers most distinct contribution to psychology was in the area of therapy and in the development of principles that would
inherently shape client-centered therapeutic perspectives (Boeree, 2001). The basic concept behind this type of therapeutic form was that the client should define the specific problems and the therapist acts
as a vehicle through which the client can interact and grow to understand themselves better. Unlike earlier therapeutic perspectives, the relationship in different from the "talking cure," in which
the therapist plays a greater role in shaping the communications. Instead, the relationship between therapist and client serves as the basis through which greater understanding of the individual can
