populations are more prone to depression but are overlooked. For example, young people are often shoved aside by a society immersed in youth culture. The majority sees depression in young
people as being something of an enigma, but not as a serious problem. Because youth is a desirable characteristic in todays culture, friends and relatives do not realize that their
teenage associates will not necessarily grow out of their sad moods. Indeed, adolescent depression is a serious problem. One professor of psychology has done a great deal of research on
depression with a focus on certain populations. Professor W. LaVome Robinson, Ph.D., ABPP has dedicated his work to minority mental health, health promotion, adolescent risk behavior and school-based intervention ("Faculty,"
2000). In looking at an array of articles published by Robinson, one can get a glimpse at this psychologists view of depression in adolescents who come from minority backgrounds.
In collaboration with colleague Gary Harper, the pair look at gang related experiences of inner city youth with a focus on black, female teens (Harper & Robinson, 1999).
In this article, depression is not the major focus, but is certainly an underlying theme. The work revolves around gang membership and looks at the "at risk" behavior teens engage
in; many influences in these young girls lives are explored to determine why they had decided to participate in such risky behaviors (1999). Gang membership is clearly deviant behavior and
sometimes may be seen as a cry for help. Robinson has always supported intervention and help for troubled teens. In this article, gang members as well as those who suffer
