wilderness and nature are concepts which vary considerably among cultures and even among individuals within a culture. Writers such as Edward Abbey, Haig-Brown and Nancy J. Turner, for example,
all perceive the concept of "wilderness" in slightly different yet complexly interrelated ways. Each of these writers has a positive as opposed to a negative perception of wilderness.
They are joined by many more notable figures from American history that help define our own concepts of wilderness. The concepts of wilderness
and nature are terms that can be defined in a variety of ways. They are often used interchangeably by some cultures and individuals. To some cultures, however, the
very term wilderness intones something that is yet to be tamed and controlled. In most cases this taming and controlling is for one purpose, the convenience or even the
profit of mankind. It is this "received" concept of wilderness which contrasts greatly with the views of many that in reality nature and wilderness are in their prime state
and that they should be respected and protected for that very reason, not exploited and molded to fit the guises of man alone.
Abbey, Haig-Brown and Turner alike all share a deep appreciate for the wonders of the natural world. Roderick Haig-Brown approached the wilderness both from a systems perspective but also from
an individual species perspective. He is remembered for his devotion to all components of the natural world. He was not only a preservationist, however, but also someone who
utilized the natural world. He fished and hunted and otherwise made use of the resources it had to offer but he doggedly worked to protect those resources for future
