SELF The social, political, economical and religious activities experienced in everyday life represent the very essence of what it means to be a human being. These representations illustrate how
and why a person acts the way he or she does, how one attributes moods, feelings and emotions, the way in which one interacts with another, as well as what
governs overall cultural behavior. Working on the assumption that, for the most part, people live their lives out of habit and routine, Dewey postulated that problem solving techniques are
borne out of what has already occurred in ones past. If ancient man learned from what had already occurred, he would effectively eliminate the need to relearn the same lesson
more than once. However, there are some problems that necessitate the implementation of basic intelligence as a means by which to effectively overcome inherent obstacles. In these particular
cases, Dewey states that such situations cannot be solved merely by habitual action and thought, which he clearly addresses in his 1908 thesis entitled The Practical Character of Reality: "...The
order of the natural world itself necessarily includes our interaction with it through scientific investigation; what the world is depends upon what we do with it" (Kemerling PG). In
