to build on or adapt theories. Within the research act little attention is paid to the actual concept of theory, despite the way in which the concept of theory is
perceived as central to the entire research act. To appreciate the link between theory and research and the interdependencies it is necessary to necessary to look at issues concerning theory,
defining what it is and how it is viewed, the way research may contribute to theory, and then to look at the way theory has been applied to a particular
area of study; in this case airline hedging. 1.1. What is a Theory? The term theory is often used with an assumption that the term is universally agreed upon and
the term is easily defined. This assumption, while wildly held, is not accurate; while there many be many commonalities in the views regarding the definition of a theory, there are
also divergences. Gelso (1998), argues that a major impediment to understanding the concept of theory is the tendency of students to associate theory with grand theoretical systems, when talking of
psychology cites psychoanalysis and behavorism as grand theories. Here there is context being given to the idea of a theory; theories need to be more specific rather than being generalised
philosophies and loose positions which may or may not be linked by a number of different underlying theories (Gelso, 1998) also goes on to state that the generalised grand theoretical
