critical in determining company loyalty? Money is a motivator to some extent, but with a reduction of loyalty firms do have to pay attention to other aspects of employment. There has been a labor shortage in the programming arena for some time (Cole & Cole, 2000). Also, creating loyal employees does not necessarily mean that the firm will want to groom someone to retain for life (Cole, 2001). That is rather unrealistic. Instead, the concept of loyalty in this day and age describes "the quality of a working relationship rather than just its duration" (2001, p.Y13). In other words, no firm expects anyone to stay for life, but they do want someone to spend a good amount of years at a firm for a period of time that is mutually beneficial. This means more than just benefits and perks. Rather, the relationship has to be qualitative in respect to opportunity and growth within the profession. It means that people should be able to come to work each day and feel challenged and not feel as if their every move is scrutinized. Employees must be given opportunities to grow in their field as well as the latitude to accomplish that growth. Greco (1998), in discussing this topic, explains that the new loyalty is one where the individual is loyal to himself as opposed to a single employer. That statement suggests employees are honest and loyal, but loyalty does take on a different meaning today. Further, this is a trend that is shaping the future and should prompt managers to take notice if in fact they want to retain good workers (1998).
