result of increasing complexity. A recession may be seen as a crisis in many organisations; the majority there will be a need to change and adapt in order to survive.
Isabella (1990), notes that changes which require wide scale adaptation can be some of the most problematic. The type of change and way in which an organisation responds to a
recession may vary, depending upon the strategy they determine to provide them with the optimal chance of survival or success, as well as many external influences. If change in response
to a recession is difficult, the way in which a recession will impact when a change is already underway can be seen as exponentially difficult. When an organisation decides to
implement a change traditional literature presents a change process, with different stages that can be managed and organised it a relatively logical manner. Although it is recognised there are complexities
in place, such as human responses, the models generally present prescriptive methods of dealing with these issues. However, literature which examines the process of change itself, notes that despite the
static nature of change models, the change itself will not take be limited to a constrained range of issues (Isabella, 1990). Instead, a change will have many influences which may
not be expected, and could change processes may require frequent adjustments to account for the different influences (Palmer and Dunford, 2008; Isabella, 1990). Isabella (1990), notes that some of
the most challenging can include mergers and acquisitions and leadership successions, events that may occur during a change process, and becomes tainted by recession, or may themselves be changes brought
about due to recession. Mergers and acquisitions during difficult times are not uncommon, and leadership changes due to poor results are also seen as changes being implemented appear to be
