1848, Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels published the Communist Manifesto anonymously. In it they demonstrated how the working classes could overcome the capitalist regime and work for a better state.
Little did they know that within a month of its original publication, revolutions broke out across Europe. When watching the revolutions and seeing how ineffective they were, Marx and Engels
realized that the revolutions which were occurring in France in 1848 were unlike the revolution which occurred in the previous century. While the French Revolution of Napoleons time had a
united fighting force it failed ultimately because the new government implemented by Napoleon effectively replaced the old government with little representation from the people. The revolutions which took place in
France in 1848 however, did not succeed because the struggle was between the two middle classes and essentially pushed aside the working man once again. It was not until the
formation of the International Workingmens Association and their request to have Marx rewrite the Manifesto to incorporate more broader terms that Marx expanded on the necessity of the intellectual development
of the working class that reformations in the true spirit of socialism and unionism was attainable. Through collaborative action and interaction, the Manifesto supported by the unions of the day
is still strong within the unions of today. During the 19th century substantial working class movements began to emerge around the European continent
that began to form powerful working classes who began to adopt socialist ideals. Socialist writings began to immerge under a under a new category of thinking called "utopian socialism". Marx
