is a strong connection between intellectualism and comedy. Comedy is difficult to create, whether the medium is a novel, a film, or television; unless it is the broadest possible
physical comedy (pies in the face and so on), it often relies on language or situation for its impact. When it is slyly packaged and absurd, it demands that
readers/viewers take an intellectual approach or theyll miss a lot. This paper examines the connection between intellect and the comic sensibility, using Flann OBriens novel The Third Policeman as
an example of the kind of comic novel that is more readily appreciated when a reader brings intellect to bear on some of its constructions. The Third Policeman The
Third Policeman by Brian ONolan (Flann OBrien) is one of those novels that its almost impossible to describe, its so bizarre. Most of the sources and reviews Ive found
describe it as "darkly comic," meaning it finds humor in situations that most of us find dire. Its a "story about academic obsession, a fable about crime and punishment"
and has something to do with bicycles, which may or may not actually be human beings-or rather, bits of human begins who have been absorbed into the bicycle via the
"Atomic Theory" (Taaffe, 2002). The novel begins with the frank statement "Not everybody knows how I killed old Philip Mathers" (Taaffe, 2002), which immediately poses difficulties for the reader.
Since we are going to be with this person throughout the book, and listen to him tell us the story, we are going to have to somehow reconcile ourselves to
